Autissier, Isabelle; Coum, Andrée; Cuillandre, Jean Pierre; Veron, Gerard; Latrouite, Daniel.
At the end of the seventies, as fishing abundance (based on Catch Per Unit Effort) in crabs and lobster fishery steadily declined, operating expenses increased, and fishing boats changed strategy (changing metiers, covering larger distance to fishing areas, fishing seasons being extended, ...) professionals and scientists aimed to consider reinforcing management measures. To enlighten and support potential related decisions, the Comité Régional des Pêches et Cultures Marines de Bretagne (Regional Committee for fishing and farming in Brittany), together with the ISTPM (Ifremer since 1984), conducted a survey on the exploited populations and gave a review of the involved Breton fleet. This report shows the results of a survey conducted among fishermen,...

Estimation du stock naturel d'ormeaux du golfe du Morbihan ArchiMer
Billy, Stéphanie; Peronnet, Isabelle; Salaun, Michele.
The Gulf has very tiled sea beds, and the surface areas of habitats suitable for ormer populations are rather reduced (1.56km2). Three zones have ormer densities of interest from the point of view of profitability, Brannec, lrus and Creizig. But since their surface area is not great, the exploitable biomass, that corresponding to individuals of a size greater than 80mm (legal catch size), is average. These three zones would be exploitable but following a limited fishing effort. The sectors of Ile aux moines and Jument and Henn Tenn show average to low densities and are not therefore exploitable in a profitable way. Finally, Gavrinis and le Logeo have revealed low densities of ormers, this could be due to an intensive illegal exploitation. In fact, many...

The estuary of the Odet, which can be defined as a ria, is an integral part of SAGE, taken on by SIVALODET. This space was hardly studied and it seemed important to perform a full assessment of knowledge and issues relating to this ria's fragile and unstable ecosystem. This assessment must be performed according to several points of focus; it must first of all strive to retrace the history of the fisheries in the Odet, then make it possible to identify as clearly as possible the marine habitats that make up this site. With that, it must then bring to light the potential resources of the estuary and finally resituate the Odet in relation to the other Breton estuaries.

Between December 2013 and March 2014, a cluster of about 12 storm events hit the coast of Brittany with an exceptional frequency. It was in February that these storm events were the most frequent and particularly virulent. The significant wave heights measured off Finistere reached respectively 12.3 m and 12.4 m during Petra and Ulla storms on February 5 and 14. However, analysis of hydrodynamic conditions shows that only three episodes promoted extreme morphogenetic conditions because they were combined with high spring tide level. The first one occurred on January 1 to 4, it was followed by events from February 1 to 3, and March 2-3. During these three extreme events observed tide levels were above highest astronomical tide level (HAT). Maximum surge...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Camus, Patrick; Joly, Jean-pierre.

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Gohin, Francis.
The efficiency of the scallop dredge used in baie de St Brieuc (Britany) has been directly determined by divers swimming along the track marks left on the bottom. Results, concerning essentially year class two, show that efficiency and damage caused by the dredge on scallops are highly variable according to nature of the sea bed. On smooth grounds, the average efficiency is 67% and the average percentage for severely damged scallops is 2% ; on rough grounds, theses percentages are respectively 30% and 17%. These results associated with a dredge survey on a particular area of the baie de St Brieuc allow an assessment of scallops abundance. The statistical method used, relevant to the geostatistic theory, takes into account the scallop spatial distribution...

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Lemarie, Gilles.
Since 1973 some pectinides spat collection experiments have been conducted by the Fishery team of the Brittany Oceanology Centre, on two deposits exploited by commercial fishing: the roadsted of Brest and especially the St-Brieuc Bay The experiment carried out in 1973 was the first French attempt on this group of species and the results have been very encouraging: although the technology used was rudimentary, the best collectors enabled the collection of 30 to 50 king scallops (Pecten maximus) each and of 6,000 to 8,000 scallops (Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularis). The research protocol used enabled the determination of the sequential aspect of the fixation, and of the growth speed of the young animals. In addition, the difference between both deposits...

Charuau, Anatole.
In the beginning, the coastal fleet of the Bigouden region fished by trawling and was completely focused on exploiting lobster and hake. It is a traditional business that expanded between the last war and the 70s, reaching its peak between 1975 and 1980. The best image to give an idea of this fleet is that of a "bucket waterwheel" endlessly discharging its catch in the four ports of the Guilvinec district. Where there is a seafaring business in Guilvinec, Loctudy and Saint-Guénolé, there is a complementarity that is expressed in two ways: - coastal fishing constitutes a very noticeable and regular supplement to production, since sales happen daily and only bad winter weather causes a relative decrease in the supplement. - coastal fishing gives a...

Chasse, C..
The wreckage of the tanker "AMOCO CADIZ" on the reefs of PORTSALL was the fourth oil spill in ten years on the coast of Brittany : it also is the largest known oil spill in the world. The patches at sea were driven eastward by westerly winds from March 17 to March 23. 140 Km of coast line was polluted. The oil spreaded more slowly towards the north west, south and north west where it spoiled some 375 Km of touristic sea coast and important fishing grounds. The coastline is six kilometers wide ; it includes islands and large reefs. The local tidal currents are very strong and reach more than three knots, during spring tides which may rise up to nine meters in a rough sea conditions. The turbulence of the water soon dispersed the slicks and mixed the oil...

Droual, Gabin; Bridier, Guillaume.
The nudibranch Berghia verrucicornis (Costa, 1867) was sampled during a citizen science survey along the Brittany coast as part of a macrofaunal species monitoring in the intertidal area. This note reports for the first time the occurrence of B. verrucicornis in Brittany. In addition, it is also the northernmost record for this species. Its distributional range is thereby increased by 200 km to the north.

The spread goes on: the non-indigenous species Grandidierella japonica Stephensen, 1938 (Amphipoda: Aoridae) has reached Brittany (Gulf of Morbihan) ArchiMer
Droual, Gabin; Le Garrec, Vincent; Cabelguen, Jérôme; Gélinaud, Guillaume; Grall, Jacques.
For the first time in Brittany, the aorid amphipod Grandidierella japonica Stephensen, 1938 is reported in the Noyalo River (Gulf of Morbihan). The finding of ovigerous females suggests a well-established, self-sustaining population. Similarly to other European localities, we hypothesise that the shellfish farming industry is the main vector of introduction.

Dussauze, Morgan; Menesguen, Alain.
This study commissioned by the Région Bretagne and the Agence de l'Eau Loire Bretagne aimed at assessing on a mathematical modelling basis the marine influence of most of watersheds in Brittany, and the impact of 4 scenarios of reduction of the loadings of each of these watersheds on the phytoplanctonic biomass and ulva mass proliferation. The ecological 3D model ECOMARS3D has been applied to a domain containing Brittany (which is also used in an operational mode for putting everyday the 2dayforecasts on the website: http://www.previmer.org/previsions/production_primaire/modele_eco_mars3d_bretagne) and to 6 zooms which enabled a finer representation of coastal waters. This study highlighted the fact that: •a nitrate reduction for any river has no effect on...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Claude, Serge; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Yvette.
Every year, from March to December, the IFREMER / REMORA network carries out a survey of mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year ciass ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. In Brittany, this network includes 11 points, to which regional points can be added (15 in 2000). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 2000 showed rather low mortality rates, excepted mortality of several oysters when transfered to the sea. Several areas however had higher mortality rates (> 20%) : l'Arguenon, Morlaix, les Abers, Pen-Bé and Le Croisic. 2000 is a year of good growth in South Brittany (72.8 g in December), more average in North Brittany...

The network IFREMER/ REMORA watches every year, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year class ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 1999 showed a small increase of mortality rates, both in adults alter their transfer on the REMORA stations and in juveniles during the Summer season. this was particularly observed in Morlaix, Aber Benoît and Pen-Bé. Although it was better than 1998, the year 1999 was a poor year for growth, especially in North Brittany (62.5 g in...

The network IFREMER/ REMORA watches every year, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year class ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale) ; it must not be regarded as an accurate estimation of professional oyster ongrowings. With regard to REMORA results, generally tallied with professional observations, 1998 on the whole was a second year of low mortality. ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Goyard, Emmanuel; Mazurie, Joseph; Claude, Serge; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Marie-jo.
The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Results in Brittany, from 1993 to 1998, show that, in a "normal" year, 30 g oysters grow to 60-80 g at the end of the year, with a mortality rate of 10-15%. Mortality occures mainly in...

Grizel, Henri.
The study concerns two previously unseen Protozoa, Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae, responsible for epizootics in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis L. The epizootiological aspect, the impact of diseases on Breton oyster farming and the research for appropriate prophylaxes is addressed. The morphology, the ultrastructure and certain phases of the growth cycle are described for the two parasites, as well as their cyto- and histopathogenic effects. The epizootiology explains the evolution of the diseases in space and time, their conditions for propagating, the sensitivity of the parasites and the receptivity of various test hosts. A summary analysis of Breton oyster farming before and during the epizootic is done. It makes it possible to judge the...

Guillaud, Jean-francois; Bouriel, Luc.
The study of the twenty-five largest rivers of Brittany showed that nitrate concentrations are positively correlated with river flow, in 90 % of the cases. The hydrogeological characteristics of the watersheds had an influence on these relationships. In this respect, river basins characterized by prevalent surficial water runoff exhibited higher correlation coefficients and lower lag times between river flow sequences and nitrate concentrations. The multi-year trend in riverine nitrate concentrations indicated a fourfold increase over 30 years. Nevertheless, 80% of rivers exhibited a recent decrease in nitrate concentrations, independent of inter-annual river flow fluctuations. The highest annual rates of nitrate decrease corresponded to river basins for...

Characterization of littoral erosion and submersion hazards in Brittany by historical approach ArchiMer
Henaff, Alain; Le Cornec, Erwan; Jabbar, Marie; Petre, Anne; Corfou, Jeremy; Le Drezen, Yann; Van Vliet-lanoe, B..
Knowledge regarding the systemic vulnerability of coastal territories to erosion and flood has progressed during the last decades thanks to the consideration of hazards but also of other components such as the stakes, the management and the social representations of the coastal risks. However, in numerous cases the development and urbanization of coastal territories submitted to the coastal risks continues. It results in the increase of exposed populations as well as in the increase of the cost of exposed properties, increasing in return their vulnerability. So, in the objective to improve the management strategies and to strengthen the memory of the risk, the need to specify the characteristics of hazards remains important. In this sense, the intensity,...
